QB Scramble: AFC West Edition

  • by
Fantasy Football 2025

As another NFL season concludes, the most anticipated time of the year finally approaches…The NFL Offseason.

This is one of my favorite times of the year. I enjoy predicting offseason moves and trying to anticipate big acquisitions before they happen.  I’ve done extensive research on how each QB opening could potentially be filled this offseason. I feel ready for the NFL offseason, and the Super Bowl hasn’t even kicked off yet.

In my attempts to fill in the blanks through extensive research, there is always a chance that some of that research could be making something out of nothing. Please keep in mind that this is all speculative writing that hasn’t been provided insider information; therefore, you should take this input “with a grain of salt.”

I still hope you all enjoy this series nonetheless, as I predict the Quarterback Rooms for each NFL franchise in 2025. Today’s article focuses on the third division in the AFC, the West.

2025 AFC West QB Room Predictions

Kansas City Chiefs

Quarterbacks: Patrick Mahomes, Carson Wentz

Throughout this article series, I have tried to stay level-headed on my takes and not say anything too out of the box. Bear with me for a second, but I’m going to state a hot take regarding Patrick Mahomes…Patrick Mahomes is still good.

I’m not going to use this portion of the series to highlight all of the accomplishments for Patrick Mahomes, similar to how I did with Lamar Jackson. I just figured that there needed to be an article that speaks on Patrick Mahomes accurately and doesn’t potentially overreact to his poor Super Bowl performance. Rinse, Cycle, Repeat. The Chiefs are running it back in their quarterback room.

Fantasy Advice: If your league starts to fade Mahomes based on Super Bowl recency bias, buy the dip.

Los Angeles Chargers

Quarterbacks: Justin Herbert, Mac Jones

I’m going to take a different approach to talking about Justin Herbert than I would about some of the other top-tier quarterbacks in this article. He doesn’t get the same “Oh he’s good, lets fill up this portion of the article by talking about how safe their job is, due to how good they are.”

As a huge fan of Justin Herbert, I want to see an MVP-caliber Justin Herbert this season that potentially upsets Kansas City for first place in the AFC West. So until that happens, as a challenge to Herbert, I’m going to focus on Mac Jones instead. I want Justin Herbert to give us all a reason to talk about him this year, or at least talk about him in the Lamar Jackson/Josh Allen/Joe Burrow tier.

After spending last season as the backup to Trevor Lawrence, as well as filling in as the part-time starter while Trevor was out with injury, I think we see a new landing spot for Mac Jones. During training camp we saw a different side of Jones that we never saw in New England. Without the pressure of being the face of the franchise, Jones looked happy for once. I think he didn’t anticipate seeing the field last season and enjoyed his time as the backup quarterback.

To any readers out there who watched the show “Blue Mountain State,” you might recall Alex Moran’s statement about all the perks of being a backup quarterback compared to being the starter. Since Jacksonville is far from contention, maybe Mac Jones enjoys the perks of being the backup to Justin Herbert, where he can also chase a Super Bowl ring with the Chargers.

Fantasy Advice: Pair Mac Jones with Justin Herbert in case of potential injury.

Denver Broncos

Quarterbacks: Bo Nix, Tommy DeVito

Not every portion of the article series is going to be exciting. Tommy DeVito being your team’s big quarterback acquisition doesn’t really get fans to sit up in their seats, I won’t lie. Although Devito being QB2 doesn’t raise eyebrows, can we talk about Bo Nix’s rookie season for a moment? My goodness! I gave Nix the Jalen Hurts comparison early into the draft season, but I said Hurts lite.

Although I wasn’t ready to give Nix the full Jalen Hurts comparison at the time and thought he would be a slightly lesser version of him, wow, was his rookie campaign impressive. So maybe it’s a blessing in disguise that this portion of the article isn’t exciting for Broncos fans out there reading this series. You’ve got Bo Nix, who cares about upgrading your backup quarterback position to someone with more potential than Tommy Devito.

Fantasy Advice: Bo Nix drafters, first off…Great Job! Secondly, Hold.

Las Vegas Raiders

Quarterbacks: Geno Smith, Jaxson Dart (rookie)

Throughout this article series, I’ve gotten quite lucky with some of the recent reporting coming out that has aligned with most of my predictions. Not so much as of late when it comes to Geno Smith. The reports of Kliff Kubiak being a big fan of Geno Smith have given me some slight hesitation towards this idea coming to fruition, but I still feel the move makes enough sense to happen.

Russell Wilson reuniting with Pete Carroll in Las Vegas is an idea that has been heavily speculated about. With Geno Smith being the choice that Pete Carroll opted for after sending Russell Wilson to Denver, I think there’s a chance that we see history repeat itself.

Maybe Klint Kubiak and the Seahawks coaching staff are hyping up Geno to raise his trade value to a potential suitor; if so, I think it’s working. I find it hard to believe that after trading for Sam Howell as a potential replacement a year ago, the plan has changed so drastically that they want Geno locked into a high-paying contract for the next 3 seasons. I could be wrong, but if I’m not (attempts Elvis Presley impersonation), it’s Genooooooo to Las Vegas.

Trade Package

Las Vegas Raiders:

  • QB Geno Smith

Seattle Seahawks:

  • 2025 Third-Round Pick (Via LV) #73 overall
  • 2026 Fifth-Round Pick (Via LV)

Fantasy Advice: Buy Geno Smith as a QB3 in ReDraft formats.

AFC West Conclusion

Could Mac Jones find himself in Los Angeles next season as Justin Herbert’s backup? Would Tommy DeVito be a good backup to Bo Nix in Denver? Is Geno Smith joining Pete Carroll in Las Vegas? Time will tell as the free agency and the NFL Draft commence, but as of this very moment, the odds for these scenarios all coming to fruition feel very high.

Stay tuned as the next article in this series will be breaking down the last division in the AFC, the AFC East.
