Fantasy Theme: The First Real National Test for Tampa’s New Offense

Dallas is always a measuring stick.

The Cowboys bring speed, pressure, and an aggressive defensive philosophy that can force quarterbacks into mistakes. This is the type of matchup where fantasy managers find out if Baker Mayfield and Tampa’s young weapons can succeed when defenses are specifically game planning against them.

The biggest question:

Can Tampa Bay create explosive plays against a defense designed to limit them?

The good news?

Dallas’ offense creates fantasy opportunities. If the Cowboys can move the football, Tampa will have to throw. More possessions. More plays. And more chances for fantasy production.

Baker Mayfield vs. Cowboys – Fantasy Projection: 20-24 points

Dallas will challenge Baker mentally. They will disguise coverages. They will pressure him. And they will try to force Tampa into long third downs. But Baker’s biggest fantasy advantage is volume.

• 25 rushing yards

This is not necessarily a ceiling matchup, but Baker remains a strong QB1 option because the volume is difficult to ignore. Fantasy managers who drafted Baker as a late-round quarterback should feel comfortable starting him.

Emeka Egbuka vs. Cowboys – Fantasy Projection: 16-22 points

This is the matchup where WR1 expectations are tested. Dallas will likely focus on slowing down Tampa’s explosive outside receiver. The Cowboys will force someone else to beat them. That is where Egbuka’s development matters. The targets should still be there.

Chris Godwin vs. Cowboys – Fantasy Projection: 13-16 points

This is the type of matchup where Godwin earns his roster spot. Dallas will focus on limiting explosive plays. That creates opportunities underneath. Godwin becomes the safety valve.

• 6 receptions
• 65 yards

Reliable PPR production.

Cade Otton vs. Cowboys Fantasy Projection: 8-12 points

Dallas’ aggressive defense could create opportunities for tight ends. The question remains: Can Otton earn consistent targets?

• Touchdown upside

Still a streaming option.

Week 6: Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Fantasy Theme: Can Tampa’s Passing Game Survive Pittsburgh’s Defense?

If Dallas was the first test of Tampa Bay’s new identity, Pittsburgh is the first physical examination. Pittsburgh brings one of the toughest defensive identities in football. Physical. Aggressive. Relentless. This is the type of game where fantasy managers worry about offensive struggles. But there is another side. Pittsburgh forces teams to throw.

The Steelers can make running the football difficult, which could increase Baker Mayfield’s volume. This could become an ugly football game. Ugly does not mean bad for fantasy.

Baker Mayfield vs. Steelers – Fantasy Projection: 18-22 points

The Steelers will make every throw difficult. But Baker has shown he can produce when forced into volume situations.

My Expectations:

• 38 pass attempts
• 250 yards
• 2 touchdowns

A solid QB2 with QB1 upside. Pittsburgh’s defense is designed to stop the run first. They want offenses to throw into tight windows. That sounds bad. But from a fantasy perspective, it creates opportunity.

Emeka Egbuka vs. Steelers – Fantasy Projection: 14-18 points

This is a difficult matchup for a young receiver. This is the matchup where we learn whether Egbuka is truly a WR1 because Pittsburgh will challenge him physically.

The key is target volume.

My Expectations:

• 6 receptions
• 80 yards

A lower ceiling week, but the role keeps him valuable.

Bucky Irving vs. Steelers – Fantasy Projection: 13-17 points

This is probably Bucky’s most difficult matchup of the quarter. This is the biggest concern. Pittsburgh’s defensive front can erase rushing lanes.

The saving grace: Bucky catches passes.

My Expectations:

• 60 rushing yards
• 5 receptions
• 40 receiving yards

Not pretty. Still fantasy relevant. Five receptions can completely change his fantasy day. His fantasy value is no longer dependent on rushing. That matters against Pittsburgh.

Chris Godwin vs. Steelers – Fantasy Projection: 14-17 points

This is exactly why Tampa kept Godwin. Physical games require reliable receivers. Godwin wins underneath and on third downs. 

My Expectations:

• 7 receptions
• 75 yards

Week 7: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Carolina Panthers

Fantasy Theme: The Fantasy Breakout Game

This is the matchup fantasy managers have been waiting for. Divisional games can always be unpredictable, but Carolina presents an opportunity for Tampa’s offense to explode. The Panthers struggled to consistently stop explosive offenses, and Tampa has enough weapons to take advantage. This could be the game where fantasy managers say:

“Remember why we drafted these players.”

This is the matchup fantasy managers circle. Every fantasy team needs those weeks where the stars align. Carolina provides that opportunity. The Panthers are a team where Tampa’s weapons can play fast. The biggest fantasy factor: Carolina may not be able to stop Tampa’s speed.

Baker Mayfield vs. Panthers – Fantasy Projection: 24-30 points

This is a ceiling matchup. Carolina allows sustained drives, passing volume, and red-zone opportunities. This is where Baker can produce a top-five week.

My Expectations:

• 300 yards
• 3 touchdowns

A potential top-five quarterback week.

Emeka Egbuka vs. Panthers – Fantasy Projection: 22-28 points

This is the breakout spot. Carolina struggles with receivers who create separation. That is exactly Egbuka’s game. Designed touches, Deep shots, Red zone targets.

This is the type of matchup where Egbuka announces himself. Carolina’s secondary will struggle matching Tampa’s speed.

My Expectations:

• 9 receptions
• 120 yards
• Touchdown

This is the type of game that pushes him into weekly WR1 territory.

Bucky Irving vs. Panthers – Fantasy Projection: 20-25 points

The Panthers present one of the best rushing matchups on Tampa’s schedule.

My Expectations:

• 100 rushing yards
• 5 receptions
• Touchdown

This could be another reminder that Bucky belongs in the RB1 conversation.

Chris Godwin vs. Panthers – Fantasy Projection: 15-20 points

If Carolina is focused on stopping Egbuka. Godwin will benefit.

My Expectations:

• 7 catches
• 85 yards

Week 8: Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Atlanta Falcons

Fantasy Theme: NFC South Shootout

By this point in the season, we are asking, “How many Buccaneers can a fantasy manager confidently start every week. The Atlanta Falcons matchup is exactly the type of game fantasy managers look for.

Why?

Because divisional opponents create familiarity, and familiarity often creates aggressive game plans. Atlanta knows Tampa. Tampa knows Atlanta. There are no surprises.

That means both teams are more likely to attack weaknesses instead of simply feeling each other out. For fantasy purposes, the biggest factor is simple: Atlanta has enough offensive talent to force Tampa Bay to keep scoring. That matters.

Fantasy football is not always about the best matchup. Sometimes it is about the best game environment. A 31-28 game creates fantasy stars. A 17-13 game creates frustration. This matchup has the ingredients for the first scenario.

Division games are usually unpredictable and dangerous. But Tampa and Atlanta have the ingredients for fantasy production. The Falcons have offensive weapons capable of forcing Tampa to score. This is another matchup where fantasy managers want exposure. 

Baker Mayfield vs. Falcons – Fantasy Projection: 23-28 points

This is one of Baker’s best fantasy setups of the second quarter. Atlanta’s offense creates pressure on opposing teams because they have enough weapons to keep games competitive. Tampa should not be able to simply run the football and bleed the clock. The Falcons force opponents into a more aggressive passing approach. That creates Baker’s biggest fantasy advantage: Volume.

My Expectations:

• 300 yards
• 2-3 touchdowns

Atlanta’s defense is built to limit mistakes, but they are not a matchup where fantasy managers should fear Baker. They do not consistently shut down quarterbacks through overwhelming pressure. That gives Baker time to operate.

Emeka Egbuka vs. Falcons – Fantasy Projection: 18-24 points

This is the type of matchup where true WR1s separate themselves. Atlanta’s biggest defensive challenge is dealing with receivers who can win at all three levels: Egbuka brings quick separation underneath, intermediate route ability, and explosive ability after the catch. Atlanta cannot simply take away one part of his game. If they play Man coverage: Egbuka can win with route running. But if they play Zone coverage, Egbuka can find soft spots. Or, if they play Pressure packages, Baker can get him the ball quickly. This is what makes elite fantasy receivers valuable. They do not need perfect circumstances to create production.

My Expectations:

• 8 receptions
• 110 yards
• Touchdown

Bucky Irving vs. Falcons – Fantasy Projection: 18-22 points

The receiving work keeps his floor high. This matchup is where Bucky’s complete skill set becomes important. Fantasy managers sometimes look at running back matchups only through rushing yards. That is a mistake. Modern fantasy running backs win through total usage. Atlanta’s defense creates opportunities for backs who can: catch passes, run outside, create after contact: 

That is Bucky Irving.

The Falcons may limit some rushing lanes, but Tampa can attack them with screens, angle routes, checkdowns and designed touches.

Chris Godwin vs. Falcons – Fantasy Projection: 14-18 points

A steady PPR matchup. This is exactly the type of matchup where veterans shine. Atlanta will likely focus on stopping Tampa’s explosive players. That creates opportunities underneath. Godwin wins with route awareness, timing, and trust from Baker. When defenses force quarterbacks to take what they give them, Godwin benefits.

My Expectations:

• 6 receptions
• 75 yards

Cade Otton vs. Falcons – Fantasy Projection: 10-14 points

Atlanta’s defense can struggle covering tight ends. A sneaky touchdown opportunity.

Week 9: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Chicago Bears

Fantasy Theme: The Young Quarterback Duel Creates Fantasy Value

Chicago presents an interesting matchup. The Bears are improving defensively, but Tampa should still have opportunities. The biggest factor: Chicago’s offense has enough talent to keep this competitive. Fantasy managers want games where both teams can score.

The Chicago matchup is fascinating because it is not as obvious. This is not the smash spot that Carolina was. This is a game where fantasy managers need to understand player roles. Chicago’s defense is improving. They have athletic linebackers, talented secondary pieces, and a defense built around creating difficult throws.

But Chicago’s offense also creates fantasy opportunities. If their offense can keep pace, Tampa’s stars have ceiling outcomes. The biggest question: Can Chicago force Tampa into efficiency football instead of explosive fantasy production?

Baker Mayfield vs. Bears – Fantasy Projection: 21-25 points

Chicago creates opportunities because they may force Tampa to remain patient. The Bears are not a defense that you expect Tampa to completely overwhelm. That means drives could be longer. More plays. More throws. Baker’s ceiling comes from: sustained possessions, red zone efficiency, and spreading the football.

Emeka Egbuka vs. Bears – Fantasy Projection: 16-21 points

The Bears may be able to limit explosive plays, but they cannot cover everyone.

If Chicago focuses on Egbuka:

Great receivers beat coverage eventually. Volume will always win!

Bucky Irving vs. Bears – Fantasy Projection: 16-20 points

Chicago’s defense creates a tougher rushing matchup. But this matchup actually fits Bucky’s receiving ability. Chicago’s defense may force Tampa to use quick throws. That benefits him. His ceiling comes from receptions, yards after catch, and broken plays. The receiving work saves him.

• 75 rushing yards
• 4 receptions

Chris Godwin vs. Bears – Fantasy Projection: 13-17 points

Another reliable PPR week.

Best floor: Bucky Irving
Best upside: Emeka Egbuka

Quarter Two Final Thoughts

After nine weeks, fantasy managers should know exactly what Tampa Bay is. The biggest questions: 

Did Bucky Irving become a true fantasy RB1?

Yes. His rushing ability is valuable, but his receiving role separates him from traditional backs.

Did Emeka Egbuka become Tampa’s new alpha receiver?
