Best Ball Fantasy Football: A Deep Dive into an Underutilized Draft Strategy

Best Ball Fantasy Football 2025

In fantasy football, especially in best ball and tournament formats, stacking has become a mainstream strategy pairing a quarterback with one or more of his pass catchers to take advantage of correlated scoring. But not all stacks are created equally. Enter backdoor stacking, a nuanced and often overlooked tactic that savvy fantasy players use to increase lineup correlation without overpaying for early-round players or forcing picks that don’t align with optimal roster construction.

I will explain what backdoor stacking is, when and why to use it, and how to execute it effectively in your drafts.

What Is a Backdoor Stack?

Backdoor stacking is the process of completing a quarterback/receiver stack by drafting the quarterback later in the draft after selecting one or more of his pass catchers first. It’s called a “backdoor” because instead of building your stack around a top-tier QB selected early, you sneak in the correlation through the back end of your draft.

This method contrasts with traditional stacking, where a fantasy manager might target an elite QB early and then reach for his WR1 or TE1 to create a top-tier stack.

Why Use Backdoor Stacking?

There are several key advantages to using backdoor stacks in fantasy football:

Cost Efficiency

Backdoor stacking allows you to avoid early-round quarterback investment. You can load up on premium RBs, WRs, or even elite TEs, then pair them later with an affordable QB whose production is closely tied to one or more of your pass catchers.

Roster Construction Flexibility

It lets you build a stack without having to reach or go off structure. For instance, if your strategy is Hero RB or Zero RB, backdoor stacks won’t interfere with that plan.

Late-Round Upside

A wide receiver selected in the double-digit rounds may not look appealing on the surface. But if paired with his QB in a correlated backdoor stack, you now have a low-cost combo with spike week potential, something critical in best ball tournaments.

Leverage & Uniqueness

In large field tournaments, backdoor stacks can make your build more unique. Most drafters will chase the obvious QB/WR1 stack. You can be one of the few who hit on a WR3/QB combo that goes off in Week 17.

How to Execute a Backdoor Stack

Let’s break down how you might build a backdoor stack in practice, without naming specific players.

Step 1: Draft a Mid-to-Late Round Pass Catcher

Say you’re in Round 9 of a best ball tournament and you select a WR who’s currently second or third on his team’s depth chart. He might be viewed as a boom-bust option, but he’s in a strong offensive environment with a potential for spike weeks.

Step 2: Note the QB

Once you draft the WR, immediately flag his team’s QB. You’re not going to reach for him. But you are now open to selecting him if he’s still around in the later rounds. For example, this QB might go in Round 13 or 14, depending on ADP.

Step 3: Draft Your QB Later—If the Value Aligns

If, when you’re up in Round 13, that QB is still on the board and fits your roster structure (i.e., you’ve only drafted one QB or this would be your QB2 in a 3-QB build), now’s the time to complete the stack. You’ve now built a late round correlation at excellent cost.

Step 4: (Optional) Add a Third Piece

If the stack’s offense is high-powered or in a projected shootout in the fantasy playoffs, consider adding a second pass catcher or the team’s pass-catching RB or TE. This further enhances the upside without heavy investment.

Example in Action

Let’s say you draft:

  • WR2 from Team A in Round 10 (a deep threat who could benefit from certain game scripts), think Darnell Mooney
  • TE1 from Team A in Round 14 (underrated but has red zone usage), maybe Kyle Pitts
  • QB from Team A in Round 15, round it out with Michael Penix

That’s a triple backdoor stack using mid and late-round picks only. If Team A gets into a shootout in Week 17 and the QB throws for 300+ yards and 3 TDs, two to your WR2 and one to your TE, you now have slate-breaking upside from a portion of your team that costs almost nothing.

When Not to Use a Backdoor Stack

Like all strategies, backdoor stacking isn’t always appropriate.

  • Don’t force it. If the QB you’re targeting gets sniped, don’t take a third-string QB just to force correlation. The upside doesn’t justify the drop-off in talent.
  • Avoid low-volume offenses. If your late-round WR plays in a team that runs the ball 60% of the time and lacks passing efficiency, the stack is less likely to pay off.
  • Don’t ignore Week 17 matchups. In tournament formats, spike weeks in Week 17 are critical. Targeting backdoor stacks in projected high total games can amplify your ROI.

Tools and Tips

  • Use ADP to your advantage. Don’t reach; let the stack fall into your lap organically.
  • Track bye weeks. In best ball, stacking a QB and two WRs with the same bye can leave you exposed.
  • Draft software & sites. Use draft assistants or platforms that highlight correlations as you draft. Underdog, DraftKings, and FFPC formats are ideal for this strategy.
  • Be fluid. Backdoor stacking works best when you adapt to how the draft unfolds, not when you lock yourself into rigid player targets.

Final Thoughts

Backdoor stacking is a powerful tool in a fantasy manager’s draft strategy arsenal. It allows you to unlock correlation and upside without paying a premium. By understanding player roles, ADP trends, and offensive environments, you can build sneaky stacks that break slates in the fantasy playoffs, especially in best ball tournaments where every spike week counts.

Use backdoor stacking to diversify your portfolio, leverage late-round value, and craft unique lineups that can rise above the field when it matters most. It may not be flashy, but it just might be the difference between a break-even and a tournament win.
