Wow, this year has been BRUTAL on our fantasy stars, and this week was no different. I’m not just talking about injuries. Several stars have underperformed, and at this point in the season, it’s time to cut ties. So, who are you going to replace them with? The waiver wire is getting thin, but luckily, there are still some gems available. Let’s get into a few Week 4 waiver wire options that can help keep you on the right track (and no, Quentin Johnston is not on this list).
Week 4 Waiver Wire Additions
Geno Smith, QB, Seattle Seahawks
Available in 57% of Yahoo leagues, 72% of ESPN leagues, and 60% of Sleeper leagues
With quarterback injuries spreading across the league like the bubonic plague, Geno Smith should absolutely be a player you’re looking to add. (If you’re willing to roll the dice on injuries, I would prioritize Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold over Smith, but as of right now, I need more information on the knee injury before I add him.) Smith hasn’t been super productive in the touchdown department, but he is putting up solid passing numbers and, more importantly, has been consistent. Next week, he does have a matchup against the Detroit Lions, but with injuries to two of their starting linebackers as well as a concussion for safety Brian Branch, the Lions’ defense may not be as formidable as we expect them to be. With the weapons at his disposal, Smith is a solid choice this week at quarterback.
FAAB Bid: 6-10%
Bucky Irving, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Available in 65% of Yahoo leagues, 68% of ESPN leagues, and 56% of Sleeper leagues
I don’t like to dance on anyone’s grave, but it looks like Rachaad White’s time as the lead running back in Tampa Bay may be coming to an end. While Irving only saw 18 of the Bucs’ offensive snaps, he still saw nine carries to White’s six and was waaaaay more efficient with those touches, averaging 7.8 yards per carry to White’s measly 2.8. He also had a decent role in the receiving game, which has been the bread and butter of White’s fantasy value, so don’t be surprised if he emerges as the RB1 in the coming weeks. In Week 4, the Bucs have a matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, who have allowed nearly 135 rushing yards per game. If Irving continues to “pirate” touches, as head coach Todd Bowles all but confirmed Monday, he’s a must-add in all formats.
FAAB Bid: 15-25%
Braelon Allen, RB, New York Jets
Available in 64% of Yahoo leagues, 72% of ESPN leagues, 54% of Sleeper leagues
I know we covered Braelon Allen last week, but some things bear repeating. How is he still available in a majority of leagues?! Yes, I understand he’s technically a “backup” running back, but he’s one of the few who has shown consistency from a fantasy standpoint. While he’s still only playing around half of the offensive snaps, the Jets prioritize him as a weapon when he’s on the field. He’s already sitting in RB2 territory in PPR leagues overall, and that’s with a basically non-existent Week 1 stat line. I preached about it last week, but I’m just gonna say it again: get Braelon Allen on your rosters.
FAAB Bid: 20-30%
Jauan Jennings, WR, San Francisco 49ers
Available in 68% of Yahoo leagues, 64% of ESPN leagues, 56% of Sleeper leagues
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Superman Jauan Jennings!
Truly, he would have been included in the article last week had we known Deebo Samuel’s status earlier in the week, but after a MASSIVE performance on Sunday where he recorded 175 yards and three touchdowns on 11 receptions, he has to be the number one wide receiver addition for Week 4. While some could argue that this performance was only because Samuel and tight end George Kittle were out, Jennings has proven to be a valuable wide receiver even when everyone is healthy. Will he put up three touchdown games when everyone is healthy? Highly doubtful. Will he still be a solid flex option going forward? I think he absolutely can be. However, even if he’s not, he will still be valuable over the next few weeks with matchups against the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals.
FAAB Bid: 10-12%
Xavier Legette, WR, Carolina Panthers
Available in 90% of Yahoo leagues, 80% of ESPN leagues, and 65% of Sleeper leagues
Keon Coleman may be the most loveable rookie in the media right now, but Xavier Legette is a close second. In addition to being extremely likable, Legette is now set up to be a fantasy darling in the Carolina Panthers offense with Andy Dalton under center and Adam Thielen likely out a few weeks with a hamstring injury. In Week 3, he played 44 of the Panthers’ 70 offensive snaps, and while that doesn’t seem like anything to write home about, he’s still earning an 18.4% target share. With Thielen likely missing time, his usage should only grow in the coming weeks.
FAAB Bid: 5-7%
*Bonus Pick*
Jalen Tolbert, WR, Dallas Cowboys
Available in 96% of Yahoo leagues, 93% of ESPN leagues, and 89% of Sleeper leagues
I’ve seen fellow Cowboys wide receiver Brandin Cooks on many of the waiver wire articles this week, but I don’t think he’s the one you want in this offense. For me, it’s third-year man Jalen Tolbert. He’s played nearly as many snaps the past two weeks as Cooks, and it seems he’s emerging as the WR2 on this offense, seeing a slightly higher target share on the season and seeing just one less target than Cooks in Week 3. I know all you dynasty nerds are pumping your fist at this one because we’ve been waiting on the Tolbert breakout, but it seems like it could finally be here. Don’t miss out on him in your redraft leagues.
FAAB Bid: 3-5%
