Now that we have a sample size of numbers from Week 1, we can look ahead to Sunday! Did you start the wrong people last week? Are you suffering from an injury already? I’m here to help, as I’m having the same problems. Let’s look at the WR vs. CB matchups I find interesting in Week 2.
Week 2 WR Matchups
Favorable Matchups
Brandon Aiyuk vs. Minnesota
In Week 1, Aiyuk did not perform as most had hoped. This hurt a lot of teams that had him plugged into their lineup for Monday night. Aiyuk didn’t practice all summer or play a preseason snap, which might be a contributing factor to his performance. His five targets and two catches for a total of 38 yards didn’t help anyone much. Well, it’s a good thing Aiyuk has now played a whole game and has a whole week of practice.
With Christian McCaffrey (IR) out, everyone else will need to step up. If you somehow have Aiyuk or Samuel on a team with McCaffrey (I do), this is your silver lining. This is a step-up situation for Aiyuk and Samuel. The Vikings’ defense was good last week; however, it was against the Giants…I don’t think this week is going to be like that. They will target Shaq Griffin, who will be guarding Aiyuk; again, good against the Giants doesn’t mean much against Aiyuk. I expect this is Aiyuk’s bounce-back game. I have much more confidence playing him this week, even after last week. Samuel is guarded by Stephon Gilmore and will see plenty of targets himself. I’m not sitting either of these wide receivers, and you shouldn’t either.
Jameson Williams vs. Tampa Bay
Jameson Williams showed you last week why you should have drafted him, and the same goes for this week. Williams is lining up against rookie cornerback Tykee Smith. Tampa Bay’s defense is already facing a long list of injuries, making this a very good week to have Williams in your lineup. Last week, Williams went for 121 yards and one touchdown. This week, he might not see as many yards due to a minor ankle injury. However, I see him taking full advantage of the rookie on Sunday.
D.J. Moore vs. Houston
Due to injuries to Rome Odunze and Keenan Allen, Moore could see a much bigger role on Sunday. Facing Derek Stingley is also very favorable for him, as Stingley was rated at the bottom of performing cornerbacks last week. I know you may be discouraged by Caleb Williams’ play already, but don’t be. He will have to make throws Sunday, and Moore will be seeing more targets. Last week, Moore had eight targets, five catches, and 36 yards. Moore could be a sneaky play if you are struggling with an injury.
Not-So-Favorable Matchups
Brandin Cooks vs. New Orleans
Cooks is facing Marshon Lattimore and will probably see fewer targets on Sunday. Last week, Cooks had seven targets, four catches, 40 yards, and got himself in the end zone. I expect Prescott to look more toward CeeDee Lamb this week, as no one likes to target Lattimore or the wide receiver he’s guarding.
George Pickens vs. Denver
Pickens will be facing the #1 cornerback in the league in Patrick Surtain. This is a no-go for me, no thought about it, and Pittsburgh isn’t stupid. They will be running the ball more against Denver if they can.
Garrett Wilson vs. Tennessee
Wilson will be facing L’Jarius Sneed, making him another big name who could see fewer targets this week. The Jets are facing a good secondary this week. Rodgers will need to get the ball out, but I think Wilson will need to get very crafty to fight for targets this week, and the run game will try to be implemented more.
